Keilor is a residential suburb situated 16 km north west of Melbourne on the Maribyrnong River. Essentially residential with large industrial developments in adjacent suburbs, there are also several shopping centres in the area. Keilor Shopping Centre and Watergardens Town Centre are approximately 5 km away. Today Keilor has a rich, diverse population within a low-density suburb that still retains a connection with the landscape and its village roots. Since its inception as a stopping place on the road to the gold fields, to today, Keilor Village Activity Centre remains the hub of community life. Keilor Village is a unique example of a local urban environment that has retained a semi-rural character over the last 150 years, despite Melbourne’s growth around it. This is primarily due to the low-scale development and the strong landscape character created by significant mature tree strands. The combination results in the much prized, intimate nature of the village. The Village is home to the Keilor Football Club, Keilor Cricket Club and the Keilor Park Sporting precinct is located approximately 3 km away.

The Keilor township is relatively small in area, transected by both the Old Calder Highway and the Calder Freeway. In addition to the original primary school there is St Augustine’s school and Overnewton Anglican community college is nearby. The historic bridges approaching the town are on the Old Calder Highway and Arundel Road, both crossing the Maribyrnong River. The Keilor Hotel remains the oldest family owned hotel and is the sole survivor of the Gold rush era where there were a dozen hotels. The heritage listed Overnewton homestead is off the Western Highway about 2 km from the town centre. The heritage listed Organ Pipes National Park on Jacksons Creek is only 8km away just off the Calder Freeway.
